Sycamore Anthracnose
Sycamore Anthracnose affects sycamore trees (Plantanus occidentalis) and London Plane trees (P. x acerifolia) in the urban environment as well as trees in the wild. It is a disease caused by the fungus Gnomonia leptostyla (syn. Apiognomonia veneta) and is found throughout the range of the sycamore tree. Although the disease is not considered fatal trees that are infected become weakened by defoliation and disfigured by the twig cankers. Fungal spores found in twig cankers on 1-2 year old branches emerge in the spring and infect new leaves. The fungus then moves from the leaf, down the petiole, and into the twig where it causes new cankers.
When a sycamore tree is macro-infused with Arbotect 20-S the 1-2 year old twigs are protected from the establishment of new cankers. This breaks the disease cycle and alleviates the symptoms for three years of protection. Application of Arbotect 20-S is done when the tree is in full leaf. It is applied mid-summer into fall just after the tree refoliates from the leaf and shoot blight stages. Applying through the Macro-infusion protocol ensures even uptake and distribution throughout the canopy. Protection and suppression of symptoms will begin the next season. Arbotect 20-S does not kill the fungus that is already present the tree, rather it disrupts the fungus’s life cycle and prevents the formation of new cankers. Leaf symptoms will be present the season after treatment but will diminish over the three year period. - Sycamore Anthracnose is a stem inhabiting fungus that causes defoliation, twig dieback, and a ragged appearance.
- The seriousness of this disease is relative to the health of the tree it is infecting. Healthy trees can withstand many years of defoliation, while trees in a stressed condition can experience severe dieback and decline.
- Most disease infection grows out of the twigs and into the leaves from the inside - thus sprays are not very effective.
- Disease severity changes from year to year and is dependant on temperature. Cool springs are more conducive to severe Sycamore Anthracnose outbreaks.
- Treatment with Arbotect Macro-infusion, gives fungicidal protection from the inside of the tree as it coats the small twigs and branches were the disease grows. One treatment lasts for 3 years.
