Russia sends satellite to the arctic

Earlier this week, Russia sent a space satellite named Arktika-M to the far-flung, cold Arctic region. The satellite will reportedly watch and note the weather and environmental patterns of the area.

The satellite is part of Russia's plan to increase its economic activities in the Arctic.

New expedition occurs in the midst of increasing arctic temperatures

Russia's plan has drawn criticism from environmental groups due to the effect of global warming on the arctic. Russia plans to invest in the area, and it's building a northern sea route amidst the increasingly melting ice covering the region.

The area has experienced a rise in its temperature, and it's currently estimated by scientists to be twice as warm as the temperature that was experienced in the region 30 years ago.

The satellite was sent to its destination via Russia's Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome by a Soyuz rocket. The news was announced on Twitter by the head of Russia's Roscosmos space agency- Dmitry Rogozin.

Russia to send more satellites to the arctic region

As part of its plans to develop the region, Russia is planning to send more satellites in 2023. According to Roscosmos, the satellites will provide  Russia with 24hours reports about the area's weather and environmental patterns.

The satellite was designed to have an elliptical orbit that will move along northern latitudes. This will allow the satellite to mainly monitor the northern area of the arctic as satellites that are launched along the Earth's equator can't properly monitor the arctic.

Mia Bennett, a geographer working in Hong Kong, said more data about the weather and ice patterns in the Arctic will be needed as more countries explore the region for trade and economic reasons.

She also added that the data obtained by the satellites will probably be used by countries for military, commercial, and security reasons. She concluded by saying "There is also an element of data nationalism that is feeding into all this".

South Africa's biggest water supply gets contaminated by raw sewage

The South African Vaal river, which services up to 19 million people, has been contaminated by raw sewage. The information was released by the South Africa Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The Vaal River is a major source of domestic and commercial water to households and companies in South Africa, especially in the Gauteng area. It was also discovered earlier this year that water lettuce, a form of weed, is growing along the river for the first time in history.

South Africa is one of the most polluted countries in Africa

The water contamination comes as no surprise to environmental activists as South Africa is one of the most polluted countries in Africa. In 2019, the country experienced a 1.5% increase in carbon pollution, and it still relies on coal as its source of electric power.

The SAHRC said the Vaal pollution shows that South Africa needs to protect its citizens by focusing on effective waste management. The Vaal Dam services "more than 13 municipalities, 40 mines, and 926 industries in and around the Gauteng province."

The pollution was made public by local and international news authorities, which was then investigated by the SAHRC as a possible human right violation.

The SAHRC says the government is yet to act

According to the report released by the SAHRC, the South African government has not yet responded to the Vaal river pollution, which might lead to irreversible damage to the important water source.

The pollution will hurt the 19million people that depend on the water from the Vaal River. Maureen Stewart, an environmentalist, warned that South Africa's pollution has far-reaching consequences if it continues to remain unchecked.

She added that the Vaal river pollution has contributed to unemployment in downstream industries as people are avoiding the contaminated water. Her comment is supported by data that shows investment in South Africa's tourist industry has drastically reduced due to the contaminated water.

RwandAir set to issue IATA travel pass

RwandAir is set to become the first airline in Africa to offer the IATA travel pass. The IATA is a form of digital passport that will allow users to know if they are qualified to travel based on their documents and health information.

The initiative was born out of the coronavirus pandemic that has killed millions of people around the world. Singapore airline is the first airline to test the IATA Travel pass.

RwandAir says the IATA pass will help the company move past the pandemic

The airline said the IATA trial run will help the company move past the pandemic and also help the company transition seamlessly into a post-covid-19 future. The test trial will begin in April and will be offered to a select few. The IATA app will its users obtain their COVID-19 test results and mark that they are authorized to travel.

The IATA Travel Pass will also provide travelers with a "digital passport" filled with travel documents that will help airline authorities determine their eligibility to travel.

  • Medical information one coronavirus test results
  • Certified insurance documents
  • A verified online identity

These are what the IATA travel pass app will contain.

RwandAir CEO expresses pride over the company's upcoming IATA trial run

Yvonne Manzi Makolo, the chief executive officer of RwandAir, said the company feels honored to be the first African airline to test run the product. She added the IATA pass will assist airline authorities in enforcing the needed social distancing and health protocols needed in our current climate.

Makolo said the IATA pass will not only help the company resume its flight operations, but it would also ensure the safety of its passengers. She praised the ingenuity of the app, especially its easy-to-use interface that allows authorities to share information easily.

Makolo concluded by saying RwandaAir is ready  "to be part of IATA’s Industry Advisory Panel to ensure we guide the technology development in a way that covers the unique requirements of our passenger profile".

Guinea experiences Ebola outbreak

Guinea has confirmed new Ebola cases in part of its country. There are currently fears that the virus might spread to other places in Guinea and its surrounding countries. The previous Ebola outbreak in 2014-2016 led to hundreds of deaths in the country.

The outbreak led to the production of two Ebola vaccines that have been registered and approved by the World Health Organization(WHO). In the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC), the vaccine has been proven to be effective against the transmission of the virus among people.

Fruit bats are the source of the Ebola virus

The virus is said to originate from fruit bats that live in forest-dense areas. Similar to the coronavirus, the bats are immune to the Ebola virus and act as a form of storage for the deadly virus.

Bat to human infection occurs indirectly when humans come across the infected blood in animals they eat; Cases of Ebola virus have been reported in animals like the monkey and antelope. The infection can also occur directly between the bat and humans.

The Ebola Virus is dangerous to contain because it's always present in nature. Quick and decisive action has been proven to be the most effective method for containing the virus. It's also advisable to prevent the spread from the host community to other regions especially as health care systems are currently overwhelmed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Guinea lacks a proper health care system

Although more people in Guinea have access to proper healthcare, the country's infrastructure is insufficient to deal with a large-scale Ebola outbreak.

The country still records high death rates from easily treated diseases. Health care professionals say the country's previous experience with the virus will assist its healthcare system in dealing with the virus.

There is also concern over the efficacy of the virus against all the strains of the Ebola virus. The vaccine has only been proven effective against the Zaire Ebola virus.

China experiences a decrease in production rate

According to data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), production in Chinese factories experienced minimal growth. Its current manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) is at the lowest it's been since May 2020.

The slow growth hindered China from meeting the expected Market output. Although its PMI score is at 50.6, it did not fall to the 50.0 level that marks contraction. Analysts are expecting the PMI score to fall to 51.1.

Activity at Chinese factories are yet to fully resume

Normally, activities at Chinese factories hit low levels during the Lunar new year, but the coronavirus pandemic has led the government to reduce the activities of workers in factories.

China's economic growth has been picking up speed since its decline early in 2020 due to an increase in foreign demand for goods and stimulus packages implemented by the government.

The official PMI is composed of stats from big and state-owned companies in China. Data showed that new export orders dropped from 50.2 in January to 48.8 in February. A sub-index composed of stats from small-sized companies dropped from 49.4 in January to 48.3 in February.

Manufacturing companies suffering from increasing production costs

Manufacturing companies are suffering from increasing production costs, due to a decrease in available workers and a rise in labor wages. This was reflected in a sub-index for employment in the PMI, which dropped from 48.4 in January to 48.1 in February.

Manufacturing companies also have to contend with rising costs of raw materials caused by an increase in demand for more products. Policy sources say China may not set a growth target like it did last year to prevent companies from taking out more loans.

China's new commerce minister said the country will continue to assist by crafting policies that will benefit foreign trade and their supply chains.
